STS Major - Suggested Curriculum

NOTE: Courses taken to fulfill Science & Technology Studies requirements must be chosen from the S&TS listing, taken for a letter grade, which must be a C- or above. Prerequisites to the major: completion of one S&TS course. S&TS First-year Writing Seminars WILL NOT count as the prerequisite. No other prerequisites are required, but students should plan to fulfill the science (PBS) and quantitative (MQR) requirements of the College of Arts & Sciences early in their careers in order to be in a position to take the additional science or engineering courses as outlined below. Note: AP credits are not allowed to fulfill any A&S Distribution Requirements.

Freshman Year

Choose among the following:

  • Introductory science courses (e.g., introductory physics, chemistry or biology to fulfill the physical or biological science requirement of A&S)
  • Science, Technology, and Politics (S&TS 1101) or Histories of the Future (S&TS 1102). These courses are meant as an introduction to policy issues involving science and technology and may be used as prerequisites to the Major, or as an additional course.
  • What is Science? (S&TS 2011). This course must be taken as the Core course in the S&TS major.
  • BSOC 2051 Ethical Issues in Health and Medicine
  • Courses to meet college requirements

Sophomore Year

At least 4 courses from the following core and major requirements:

  1. Core Foundation course: S&TS 2011, if not taken during freshman year
  2. Three additional 2000 level courses
  3. One or two additional S&TS courses chosen from the department's list of courses. You may obtain this list in 303 Morrill Hall; check Courses of Study, or the Website: sts.cornell.edu.
  • Calculus (Math 1106, 1110, 1120, etc.) or another course to satisfy the quantitative and formal reasoning requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Science courses to meet the major requirement for 2 additional courses beyond the college distribution requirement
  • Courses to meet college requirements, AND/OR Electives

Junior Year

  • Additional S&TS courses to complete the 36-credit requirement for the major. Four of these courses must be 3000 level or above, and two must be 4000 level or higher.
  • Any courses for the major suggested for sophomore year not yet taken
  • Science courses
  • Courses to meet college requirements, AND/OR Electives

Senior Year

  • Additional S&TS courses to complete the 36-credit requirement for the major. Four of these courses must be 3000 level or above, and two must be 4000 level or higher.
  • Courses to meet college requirements, AND/OR Electives
  • Honors work, for those who qualify
