NOTE: Courses taken to fulfill Science & Technology Studies requirements must be chosen from the S&TS listing, taken for a letter grade, which must be a C- or above. Prerequisites to the major: completion of one STS course. STS First-year Writing Seminars count as the prerequisite. There are no other prerequisites, but students should plan to fulfill the BIO-AS, PHS-AS, SDS-AS, and SMR-AS distribution requirements of the College of Arts & Sciences early in their careers in order to be in a position to take the additional science or engineering courses as outlined below.
First Year
Choose among the following:
- Introductory science courses (e.g., introductory physics, chemistry or biology to fulfill the physical or biological science requirement of A&S)
- What is Science? (STS 2011). This course must be taken as the Core course in the STS major.
- Courses to meet college requirements
Sophomore Year
At least 4 courses from the following core and major requirements:
- Core Foundation course: STS 2011, if not taken during freshman year
- Three additional STS courses chosen from the STS Programs of Study that work towards elected Theme.
- Calculus (Math 1106, 1110, 1120, etc.) or another course to satisfy the quantitative and formal reasoning requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences
- Science courses to meet the major requirement for 3 additional courses beyond the college distribution requirement
- Courses to meet college requirements, AND/OR Electives
Junior Year
- Additional STS courses to fulfill Theme and complete the major. One of which must be 4000 level or higher.
- Any courses for the major suggested for sophomore year not yet taken
- Science courses
- Courses to meet college requirements, AND/OR Electives
Senior Year
- Additional STS courses to fulfill Theme and complete the major. One of which must be 4000 level or higher.
- Courses to meet college requirements, AND/OR Electives
- Honors work, for those who qualify
